Eh. Wyatt was on the right side of the ice, opposite from McKinnon. Nils and Rantanen were on the left. Nils pointed at Rantanen to pick up McKinnon…Wyatt, seeing this, rushes over to help. McKinnon wasn’t even his man to pick up….Nils stays put, while Lindell? gets moved by his man…Which causes Nils and Lindell to basically crowd each other on the left side of the net. Lindell and Nils (realistically) should have rotated over…I disagree with the “Nils and Wyatt were confused”. Nils seemed confused. If you look at the clip, he was actually pointing at Mikko to pick up McKinnon. Wyatt (seeing this) traveled from his side of the ice to “help”.

I think your read of this is probably more accurate than my initial one was, with regard to Lundkvist gesturing for Rantanen to cover MacKinnon, so I added an addendum to that clip.

But the fact that Johnston begins to go over there anyway does suggest some confusion among the forwards; and my understanding of the D-zone coverage this year is that Lundkivst isn't really supposed to be going out beyond the hashmarks in this spot, so it's not entirely on him. But he does probably wind up with the most blame regardless, when the puck goes through him.)

I can understand that…but I also imagine that it wasn’t Wyatt’s responsibility to cover both sides of the ice. I’m also saying this because you referenced Ludwig’s commentary from the previous pod. Ludwig said Wyatt should have pinched the puck along the wall…Just trying to understand how he was supposed to execute that when he was coming from the right side of the ice (his initial coverage zone) to defend McKinnon, who had nobody on him.

I don't recall what Ludwig's exact commentary was, but I'm more judging this based on the fact that Johnston *does* start to go over there. As you say, why would he be going over there at all, given his original position, unless he is kind of supposed to be the strong side support there after the puck gets swung over? But watching the play, it does look sensible for Rantanen to come with top-down support from that side. I'll see if I can get an answer on this from anyone, because now it's bugging me more than it was originally.

To one of my original questions…Let’s say Wyatt is supposed to travel with the puck once it swings to McKinnon. Who then, is supposed to rotate over to the area he vacated? Why were (Lindell?) and Nils crowded on one side of the net, to the point they practically ran into one another. Did Wyatt over help? I’m curious about this as well. It’s G2, and everyone is still adjusting to the new system, of course….but those are my questions.

Gulutzan has specifically called their DZ scheme a “hybrid” between zone and man on man. A basic reading of that could be that defensemen stay within home plate area (generally), while wingers patrol half wall from circles on up, and centers are more active. This tracks with a couple of players I’ve talked to who echo the added DZ responsible for centers vs wings now, but the exact areas and activation points aren’t all clear to me just yet.

Wyatt was on the ice with Rantanen and Hintz, he would have been LW in this scenario.
