Thanks for putting all the info in one place, Robert! I understand that Robo has earned the right to play hardball, but by all accounts, Jim is an extreme fair GM. Not sure which direction I even want this to go- good thing I don’t have to make any decisions!

Don’t hate me, everybody, but this is SO fun. Take a deep breath and repeat “Change is good” as many times as it takes 😎

Not this kind of change!

I’m old and I hate change! 😁

I’m in this limbo where I feel equal parts ready to name Robo my favorite player and also to take my Robertson Reverse Retro 1 jersey to Blakes to get stripped.

Great article. I’m guessing the Kirill contract has created this scenario and Robo has earned the right to get a max deal. Unfortunately for him, contending teams don’t have a lot of cap space. Do you think he has told the Nill the other teams he would be interested in signing with?

If I'm Nill I'm sure I'd want to know! Taking time and energy to work out a deal with both Toronto and Sea only to have Robo nix is a lot of wasted effort. Why WOULDN'T Robo let Nill know where he will and won't go? Seems like it benefits everyone. Although, I guess Robertson can now definitely say the market for him $15M, so he has gained that info.

Robo is great in the community and all, but time to get the knives (Knies) out and go out on a lark(in)...Thanks. I'll see myself out...

Insert "get out" meme here.

A $15M offer from Seattle means him taking $14M from the Stars IS a home team discount. If that’s what it takes, my vote is do it. Sure losing Bourque isn’t good, but Robo is the one who really can’t be replaced, not Bourque. Next year will be bare bones with call ups and fill ins. But for 27’ they get to use Seguins money to get the needed pieces.

Do we know when Robertson rejected the contract? Was it actually yesterday or was it a week ago?

Robert Tiffin's avatar

The reporting all makes it sound like this happened much more recently than that, as soon as yesterday even.

Great piece on that continuous saga.

It would be very interesting to know what was part of the package we could have had from Seattle.

As far as offer sheet goes, what are the teams that can actually do it? In other words, which teams have tha Cap space AND their own 1st round picks to do it? And, off of these teams, which ones are actually "good" destination for Robertson? By good, I mean already good or upcoming teams and geographical destinations where Robertson would like to go.

Right now, we "know" that Ottawa, Detroit, St-Louis and Seattle are not it.

In doing this analysis, it would be easier to see the level of bargaining power Robertson's camp truly have.

As far as I am concern, I would truly like it better for him to stay in Dallas. 45-50 goals scorers do not grow on trees. But if we trade him, I would like it to be in the eastern conference. It would be asking a lot to see him play against us more than 2 times per year.

I think this shows the Robertson camp that Nill isn’t bluffing. 12M or 12.5M is it. Up to Robertson now to decide where he wants to play and sometimes the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

I wonder if the NHL allows teams to restructure contracts like the NFL does. Think of all the times the Cowboys have gone to their overpaid players and asked them to take a little less for a couple of years to free up money for someone else. If allowed, would Rantanen be open to adjusting his contract to help get Robo signed?

Robert Tiffin's avatar

No restructuring allowed. Contracts are basically ironclad in the NHL unless they get mutually terminated, which almost exlusively happens at the end of a player's career, when he chooses to give up some money in hopes of signing for less with a better team with more ice time. (Or unless someone commits misconduct or something that breaches the standard clauses in all player contract, which does happen once in a while.)

Here is an alternative view having turned down Ottowa , Kraken and Blues could Robo just want to become a free agent next year

Pat's avatar

If he does, he would only get a maximum of 6 years.

He should really agree to either sign with the Stars or agree to a sign and trade right now.

Then he could go where he wants or resign with stars . No team is going to offer enough compensation if he won’t do a long term deal.
