Great article. Just a quick question: could the problem have been that the roster was built more for PDB’s system (man to man defense, work more for transition chances and odd man rushes even if they sometimes leave you exposed defensively)? Gully’s system is built more for a grinding, cycling team. I’m not sure that this style works best with the Stars top 6 group,
I do like that Gulutzan is heavily into the analytics, but as always the math has to translate into wins in the ice.
It’s a good question. The injuries cloud things, but overall, I think the Stars just need enough health to have a better third line. They had to run what were essentially two fourth lines for much of the year and into the playoffs, and that really hurt their scoring at evens. You need Seguin, Bourque, and Rantanen down that right side. (And you still need another left-winger down the other.)
Game one of the Wild-Avalanche series really made me reevaluate Dallas’ defensive performance in round one. I know that was just one game but I was surprised that Minnesota was as effective in transition as they were against Colorado.
I still think the entire team and all phases of the game need detailed and thorough review. As Jake said the window is open for a few more years but you can’t count on health as we saw this year. You also have to make some changes rather than roll the same team out and hope they’ll win more playoff games.
I have the feeling that there will quite probably be as much change this summer as there was last summer.
Is there a scenario where Benn returns next season but is not the captain? I would think he would more or less have to be the one to cede it rather than having it 'stripped' away like with the Modano to Morrow transition.
Just comparing his answer to bourques sounded very ominous, like he knows we aren’t going to be able to afford him. How does the offer sheet/first round pick compensation work if we can’t get anything worked out?

How concerned should we be about Robertson?
It all depends on the number his agent says they’re looking for.
I’m willing to bet it’s $15+

Steel?
What about Steel, exactly?
Admittedly just a bit early for roster thoughts… left him off my list… I guess it’s Easier to look at who CAN be moved, then do we want to?
… when’s camp start???
Whom do you replace Steel with that makes it work saving one million dollars?
Questions that are easier to ask than answer :))). Going w priorities… what’s it take to keep Robo
That is the $12 million question…
