If you told me the Rantanen trade would lead to losing Stankoven, Robertson, and you still don’t make it past the WCF, idk if I would still make that trade. And I love Mikko, bought the shirsey.

My opinion on a Robertson trade is really idk man it depends, if the Stars could get a good young defensemen who plays on the right side (like Tristan Luneau) and some other stuff I can see it working out but if they don't then it doesn't really make sense to me

Honestly Wyatt having that many points already is impressive. I’m really interested to see how he does this year under a new coach. As for Robertson, it all depends on the return—but hopefully we find out sooner rather than later whether he’s our star, or decides to go and be someone else's.

Takeaway from reading this (man that was a lot of words, Robert!) is that everything depends on Robertson's reaction/desires when he sees the Stars' offer. If his desires are too rich for the current Stars' cap, then tradesville here we come. Also, suck it all you Benn haters. LOL! (not that I see that here, but in the gen pop I do all the time)

Great article Robert. As much as I like Robo I’m realistic that it’s tough to keep everyone and still have a balanced team. Any other young defenseman catch your eye from teams that could trade for Robo?

I think he's worth >$10mn but clearly Nill braintrust has doubts. I think more constructive argument is what is hypothetical return. PDOcast mentioned Devils as a destination.

I just don't see a trade out there that could possibly make sense to me. Noah Dobson was the closest and we couldn't afford to sign him. There's no replacing his production. For a team with Stanley cup aspirations, a move like this, in my opinion, would be foolish. We're not going to win a deal for Robo that helps us now. Extend him now and secure your top line franchise LW.

What I keep wondering: why are the Stars going to pay $8.4 million to a guy projected to be their 3rd line center? There’s so much talk of trading Robo, but if the Stars really plan to play Duchene as the 2C it makes Johnston’s contract seem wildly inefficient. This is only tangentially related to the Robertson trade rumors. But you even shared the stats- Johnston has been the Stars 4th leading scorer in these last four years but he’s doing that from a lower in the lineup position and it seems that it makes sense to promote him to a top six role or he would be the trade bait.

With Guluzan, I fully expect Johnston, Robertson, Rantanen, Duchesne, & Hintz to be stacked in the top 6. Seguin likely will get first shot on second line, with Bourque being the next guy to get a top 6 chance.

Who would come to Roope’s line to play LW if Robertson is traded, the captain?

Giving Robo $11-13 mil AAV would be such a mistake. Robert alludes to it in the article, he fails the eye test so hard. If this team is going to focus on forechecking, a lead-footed player that shrinks physically in the playoffs is not one to put all your chips in. That contract would age like milk by the time he hits 30.

I'd see if I can pry McTavish away from Anaheim or either Kent Johnson or Cayden Lindstrom in Columbus plus some picks. The dream would somehow getting Levshunov from Chicago or Nemec from NJ, but either highly unlikely.

Free up some cap to make a big run at McDavid or Eichel and shore up your RHD. You'll be better off the next 5 years.

The Stars have a tick under $28m in cap space next year. I’m looking at puck pedia and thinking Robertson could get a 4x10.5 to make him tied for the 11th highest paid forward as of right now. It would also put him at $75m in career earnings. Does he really want to win or chase the dollar signs? Some of the top guys are starting to take shorter term which makes sense, so they get another crack at a big contract.

I also think that would be a good extension for Harley as it is the same as Bouchard’s deal.

That gives the Stars just under $7m in cap unless they move Ilya to put them at ~$10.25m with ten forwards and five D signed in this scenario. Nill would still have to figure out the second line RD, but I would take this hypothetical right now.

What say you people?
