The only reason I was able to start writing about hockey eleven years ago is because Brandon Worley let me. After founding a Certain Stars Website where I first cut my teeth in the hockey writing game, Brandon would step away from the site for good shortly after I arrived, which was all part of my big power grab that has yet to come to fruition.
But now, with Glen Gulutzan’s return to Dallas, it seemed like a great time to catch up with Brandon and hear some stories about his time covering Gulutzan 1.0. We also touched on Joe Nieuwendyk, the media landscape at the time (which is much different but not that different from today), Jamie Oleksiak, Vernon Fiddler, and a fair bit of drama around the Stars’ big 2013 rebranding.
We talked for about an hour. When I was smart, I just stayed quiet and listened, but I regret to say that I am not that smart.
While I can’t promise the audio will be much better than listening to hungry cats fighting over a pile of bagpipes, I can promise that you’ll hear plenty of great stories from a long time ago, as well as some discussion about where the team is now, why Pete DeBoer’s time ended, and more.
Give it a listen, or don’t, and beg me never to do this again. Either way, we’re talking, and that’s how you heal the world, according to a seminar I was once forced to attend.
I hope you enjoy this conversation, because I did.
