Yes both teams had to play on it… but that was the worst ice… seriously, making ice is NOT a mystery… even at the start of a period after a zamboni the pucks were bouncing like rubber balls… did anyone ask the owner why his rink can’t make decent ice?
I woke up before 6am Eastern time to get the score, saw this email title in my inbox and thought it said "WOOF" as in, woof, what a bad result. I'm glad my blurry morning vision was wrong! Will devour this in short order.
Really was. Usually you get action for about five minutes then OT hockey degenerates into dump and change hockey and the end comes on a magic richochet. That was glorious.
Hard to recall an OT with so few stoppages, impressive by both teams to be able to keep rolling over changes without anyone getting burned. Glad Steel was able to stop short of the crease or else I was afraid we'd have another goalie interference debate to sort out.
That 4th line was noticeable all night, and in all the good ways. They have a knack of grinding opponents down to a fine paste over the course of the game.
I have to admit, I saw Bäck come out and mentioned to my daughter that I was sure we weren't going to score and that we just had to hold the Avs until we got a change. Then Blackwell went and did that just to make me look like an idiot.
Robert, I'm curious about your take on the utter lack of a transition game. Not sure where they ended up but I know throughout most of the season the Stars led the league in goals in transition. Now...they're barely getting any transition opportunities at all. Yeah, when you can't even get out of your own zone it makes carrying the puck into the offensive zone difficult.
But when Colin Blackwell and Sam Steele are the only people creating transition opportunities there's a problem.
Colorado has really worked on their trap this year. It's been effective for them, and a bigger part of their success than is often reported. It's why special teams are going to keep being crucial in this series: 5v5 scoring is gonna be at a premium.
Best Dallas Stars game in a month. They looked like their old selves again, including getting off to their usual slow start and then getting better as the game went on, by the third period, they were the better team all the way up to the Blackwell goal in OT. Now, they need to win at least one of the two games in Colorado. I did see that Heiskanen is going on the trip.

Humidity is tough.

That might have been the best playoff OT I've ever seen
Honestly, I was rapt. That was designed in a lab to create new hockey fans.
