The analytics (expected goals for and against) tell me that the Stars played the better game for much of the game but got goalied. My one good eye told me that the score was pretty much reflective of the game. My mind says it was pretty much a mix of both. I just don’t think they are good enough to win 4 games against Colorado without Miro or Robo. I hope to be proven wrong. If they do win this series and get those two back, who knows how far they can go.

I would add that Cale Makar couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with most of his shot attempts tonight. I would not count upon this happening again.

My team loses Game 1 of a playoff series 5-1 and I somehow feel… encouraged??? Hockey is silly.

This would've been sufficient as a story all by itself. I wasted so much time!

Look I've been Negative Nelly since the Pittsburgh game and I missed the first period of this one, but this game was a big encouragement to me. The score says otherwise but they were competitive and got unlucky. That's an improvement from the 7 game skid to end the season. Still work cut out for them and they have to build on it but there's signs of life. Let's go Stars

Talk me out of thinking that Cody Cici played really well in this game. He made an icing error and probably was out of position at times (I’m not good at noticing those things), but he had some big hits, two great poke checks (I think), and was generally noticeable in a good way. If we can get him back down to a pairing where he needs to be, I cautiously think he could be a surprise in this series.

I think all things considered, you have to be really please with all the defensemen last night. They contained the dangerous players and cleaned up messes before they got bad, usually. Maybe Bichsel could do better on the third goal, but he's caught between multiple open guys after all the forwards get trapped.

What does it say when we say both the goalie and the DMen played well and the team gave up 5 goals?

I'm just imagining Mason Marchment skating up to the refs with a bloody face and being told to go sit down with no further discussion

And we'd all kind of not be surprised by it.

Yet again the Stars go into a playoff series believing they have the better goaltender and yet again Jake Oettinger gets outplayed.

Not blaming this on Jake in any way...but this story has been true several times now. A guy with zero playoff experience who was considered to be the Avs' weak link instead was the best player on the ice.

How many times are the Stars going to make opposing goalies look like prime Patrick Roy?

Big fan of Marchment when he is on his game, playing physical and taking on the agitator role, but I’m SO over the diving from him. It’s such a bad look and it’s going to cost us at some point when the refs start relying on reputation.

He took one and drew one, which is par for the course. But yeah, he made a meal of that interference, though one of the gloves may have gotten his face, which would be painful.
