It was so foolish not to put Seguin on LTIR knowing he wouldn't be back and sign a player at the trade deadline. No one recovers from an ACL surgery as quickly as they were hoping Seguin would. I'm a huge fan of Nill, but that was an absolutely stupid decision.
Dean, what exactly are you saying the Seguin move last year did to Dallas? They were in LTIR all season, so I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at here.
You're right, Robert. My memory was faulty. Nill did get Seguin on LTIR before the trade deadline. I just never understood why he waited as long as he did, and I thought they lost our on some salary cap relief because of the delay. Thanks for setting me straight.
I know there is only so much reading between the lines we can do, but it does feel like Dallas was blindsided by Robertson not signing the Seattle deal.
It seems to have had a domino effect where other teams are now, understandably, hesitant to make an offer.
Does this seem like it could have possibly been a strategic move by Robertson’s camp to limit the trade return the Stars might have received from other teams? Trying to force a deal instead of risking a lackluster trade?
“We have to do what’s best for the org.” I 100% understand that but also Seguin is making $10M when he hasn’t played a full season in a decade. I admire the loyalty to guys like Benn and Seguin - get what they mean to fans and the organization -, however, it’s also how you end up in a situation where you are on the verge of losing a 26 year old, 40+ goal scorer. This loyalty to Seguin for this last season will cost the team 8 years of phenomenal talent they really can’t afford to lose.
That’s no ill will towards Seguin who has every right to play out the last year of his contract. My point, it’s hard to argue you are doing what’s best for the team in trading away Robo when you were paying Benn and Seguin - with the injuries and inconsistency in performance -, $20M combined up until last year.
There are plenty of other teams that would have had those difficult conversations…and determined that moving on was likely best for the club a long time ago.
You understand players with no trade clauses can still be moved right? We have seen this happen…it’s a matter of both sides making the decision to go their separate ways.
Robert---I've heard that Seguin turned down the club's request to waive his no-trade clause. Is that in fact accurate? Second, do you get the sense that a bond has been broken between the Stars management team and Robertson, given Robo's (and his agent's) hard line stance? If Dallas offers the qualifying offer, are there any contending teams that actually have 4 1st round picks to trade? Finally, could Dallas free up enough cap space to pay Robo $13 million per year if they traded both Radek Faksa and Boosh for little to nothing, or would that still mean they could not sign Mavrik?
After watching a few other GMs, team presidents, and owners address the media over the past 2 months, I really appreciate Nill's communication skills, and class he represents his team with. He rarely says much worth reporting, but he's never embarrassing.

Glad to hear the update of Radek. I really liked having him back this year.
Thanks for the drafted players recap. I look forward to seeing them next week at the dev camp.

Seguin has a no trade clause and his contract is practically buy out proof so what are you suggesting they should do?
