Good deal for the Stars, a good deal for Robo if he wants to stay in Dallas and can wait one more year to get paid what he is actually worth and what the team can actually properly afford to pay him without wrecking the team. If he doesn't want to stay, there will be teams who will very happily overpay for him before the trade deadline. There always are.
So good to have this put to bed, at least in the near term. It is still very hard for me to feel good about any part of this off season though. I was never in favor of “running it back” and now we appear to be doing so minus a key piece in Bourque. I’ve seen some people suggest that they are willing to live with a down year until ‘27-28 when we have more cap space but I’m not a fan of that approach as it soft sacrifices a year of our window. Windows have a way of shutting unexpectedly and you need to maximize your chances while open.
Now maybe this is the best you could truly do and there was no other way to improve the roster. Proposed trades fell apart through no fault of the team and maybe you were always going to lose Bourque after his 20 goal campaign. Idk, but I can’t shake the disappointment that at least on paper, our roster looks weaker. Hopefully a full off season will help and Gully will have some tricks up his sleeve.

Seems like Robo took a lot of unwarranted flak this offseason. He clearly demonstrated that he wants to be in Dallas. Again hope they figure out a long term solution.
So that pretty much concludes the offseason - running back the same team minus Bourque and his 17 goals (I’m not counting his 3 empty net goals). As Robert noted, Stars opportunity for improvement relies on Seguin to fill the void for Bourque and Harley to have a better year. Would also throw in more maturation from Lundkvist, better overall health (Mikko, Roope) and better midseason trade acquisitions
I think this is the first part of a longer term extension. Robo takes a risk by signing 1 year deal. Team stays intact. Seguin rolls off, resigns for $2mm, cap goes up, robo signs for $14MM+.after this season. Deal is already done? Me thinks yes!
I’m just very surprised he’s gonna make this gamble. He’s literally wagering $100M (8x$12.5M) against the chance of getting $105M (7x$15M) to $126M (7x$18M)…
The $ return may be small, but he will be eligible for a NMC or NTC on an extension which I believe as a RFA he was ineligible. If he signs for 7x14.4, he will make slightly more (adding the 1x12) than an 8x14 and can get trade protection.
It’s the best alternative for him getting paid next year at closer to mkt value (moving target!) long term, AND staying in Dallas! Clearly his 2 priorities. Any opponent who gets too rough this year with him should be attacked by a “pack of wild dogs” teammates to protect him!!! Screw the 1% tougher… He’s that valuable to the team.
