What I really want to see after tomorrow afternoon is the Dallas Stars being in a good position to re-sign Robo for basically the rest of his NHL career. As good as they are, they are not one single player away from being the clear Stanley Cup favorite -- and unless they can land Conner McDavid or Nathan McKinnon, trading Robo won't make them any better even this season (much less in coming years).
I think the best approach is for them to get the best rental top 6 forward that they can get in a trade. They need to find a guy who can help the third line and play on the second line in a pinch. They don't need to find another Mikko Rantanen, although I don't put anything past Jim Nill.
With Robo, what are the rules concerning when he can sign contracts. The thought that came to mind would be to sign a moderate one year deal for his remaining RFA year then a week later sign a multi year deal as a pending UFA. In other words negotiate both contracts at the same time, giving him a little extra on the second contract and a little less on the first contract to help the cap situation.

From your second paragraph to Jim Nill’s ears, Kenneth!
Yeah, I have now noticed that. 😂 I wonder if they are not yet quite done with that $5.5 million still burning a hole in Jim Nill’s pocket.
After Bunting, it's now down to just under $2 million. They may well end up being done, but one never does know.
Ugh, I forgot that he doesn’t play for free.

I believe that would fall under cap circumvention.
here 5 seconds after Friedman reported the Bunting news hahhah
You have good (or bad) timing!
Getting Bunting??? Are we happy???
Happiness is a fickle mistress, Scotty. Are you content?
10 wins was pretty good! Might be like too much frosting on a cake???
I'm more of an apple pie guy.
